Welcome to the Howard College Big Spring Student Government Association
Students are encouraged to become involved with institutional governance by expressing their thoughts and feelings about college policies, procedures, and activities. This is accomplished by participation in the Student Government Association (SGA).
The Student Government Association consists of all presently enrolled students of Howard College. While all students are invited to attend SGA meetings, the representative voting bodies of the Student Government Association are the Student Senates:
One at Big Spring
One at San Angelo
One at SWCID
Each Student Senate consists of the following members:
Four officers elected by members of the Student Government Association on respective campuses
Freshmen representatives elected by members of the Student Government Association on respective campuses
Sophomore representatives elected by members of the Student Government Association on respective campuses.
Through this Senate, students are given an opportunity to promote student government and to develop and manage a well-rounded program of student activities. The Senate also acts as an intermediary between students, the faculty, and the administration. The President of each Senate, or their designee, serves on the President’s Council, the Special Events Committee, and the Commencement Committee.

Constitution Day
Wednesday, September 17, 2014
September 17 is Constitution Day. It is a day to stop and reflect on what our forefathers thought were important for an independent nation and the words that were put to paper that encouraged the fight for independence and defined our nation.
The Howard College Big Spring Student Government Association will hand out constitutions in the Student Union Building from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
We have not included the constitution but have included a website address with the constitution and other related documents. http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution_transcript.html
Below are quotes of character from some of the individuals that were elected to serve the United States of America.
“I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an "Honest Man.” George Washington
“Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” Thomas Jefferson
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
John Quincy Adams
“I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” Abraham Lincoln

Mid-Semester Mania! 2014
In 2013, the S.G.A. (along with help from our GREAT dorm directors) held a Mid-Semester Mania night. It was a night of great games! The Faculty and Staff VS the Students!
I am sad to report that the Faculty/Staff beat the students by a wide margin. (It has been rumored that the faculty brought in some "ringers" for pool and ping pong ... but that is just a rumor...) I heard this from one of the staff, "Of course we beat the students, it was expected. Oh, my, it's 7PM, I've got to get home to get to sleep!"
There were many games to play like ping pong, pool, Uno, volleyball, Wii, board games and more. I am sure this event will happen again soon, so maybe the students can grab the title that time!

Texas Junior College
Student Government Association
We are a proud member of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association. Please see the State Page by clicking here.
The Texas Junior College Student Government Association is the only student maintained organization in the state that works to promote the cause of community college students at the local, regional, state and national level. We are composed of over 72 member colleges across the state.
The member colleges are divided into six regional districts drawn at the county level. These regions meet at fall and annual conventions to coordinate activities and to help plan the state convention.

Community College Day 2015
The State SGA is working with TACC, TCCTA, and the Gulf Coast Consortium to make this year the best yet.
The next legislative session starts in January. But it is not too early to start talking to your elected State Representatives and Senators to make sure they know the important roles that our colleges play in the economic system of Texas. Encourage them to increase financial support for our alma maters!
